“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.”
My journey to Barlume Apothecary is not an easy story to tell. Honest stories are sometimes the hardest to recount, but their lessons can be indelible.
In my early teens I was diagnosed with an unusual case of Rheumatoid Arthritis. It was swift and relentless and it filled me with a tremendous amount of confusion, pain and anger. After quite a few years of inadequate treatment, harsh medications and adverse side-effects, the healing properties of plants were a revelation to me. I became an herbalist and a lifelong student, studying the history of plant medicine and the traditions of incorporating such medicine into our food.
I am part of a generation that is delving into our shared past to reclaim the kitchen garden wisdom of our grandmothers, and their grandmothers before them. In so many ancient and modern cultures, food is truly medicine. Plant medicine is not meant to be separate from what we eat, it is meant to be consumed together. It is this marriage of our native seasonal foods and the herbs grown beside them that fuels the alchemy I am sharing.
In search of healing, I became an herbalist. In search of nourishment, sustainability and comfort, I dug deep into understanding how food can be grown with integrity. I ultimately arrived at the intersection where these two paths meet. Barlume is a return to the marriage of herbal medicine and nourishing foods, uniting ancient herbal traditions that have long sustained countless generations before and nutrient dense food. It is this cohesive union that produces true efficiency and healing.
